Social Media Content As a Photographer | Virtual Assistant

When I’m onboarding a new client, and we are chatting about their business… it almost inevitably leads to a discussion about the roles social media content plays as a photographer. It’s like the hazy, blurry line between content creator and photographer, and most people are trying to find their stride.

You wanna show off your work, and connect with people on the apps but also don’t want to feel strangled to death by some rigid schedule or strategy. The idea of a spreadsheet for content makes you wanna curl up in bed & never come out. lol - ME TOO.

I’ve done it all. I’ve had the Notion pages… I’ve had the spreadsheets… I’ve used the planner apps… and it all made me feel a little suffocated. But I WANTED TO DO A GOOD JOB AT THE APPS, dammit!! haha

And now, things feel a little more clear & a helluva lot more laid back.

Listen, I won't sit here and claim I’ve got social media figured out ( 🤣💀) because the app is literally designed to always change & keep us guessing. But if I could go back and tell my former self something about what to post, it would be this:

show your job.

Social media content as a photographer doesn’t have to be overwhelming or confusing. As a photographer, you have a one-up… you are literally a visual artist! (My job is typing at a computer, not as entertaining haha).

If you can shift your mindset from “what content do I need to create to sell?” to… “When I’m working, I’ll just show that”… you’ll feel that freaking weight of unknown slink off your back.

When you sit down to edit… take a 7 second video and put text over it. There’s a reel or TikTok.

When you pack your camera bag… Make a video about your gear and your fav things you own.

When you’re at a shoot, set up a tripod and film a time lapse or some BTS video.

When it’s 2am and you’re door dashing Chinese food to a hotel after a wedding, make a video talking about your favorite parts of the day while you wait for your food.

Basically… when you’re working… show it.

It reminds me of that old saying about writing: “Show Don’t Tell”. That’s what you want to do with your content across apps! Bring people into your work.
(And your life too… I wanna know what my photographer had for lunch, where they’re traveling, all about their family & friends… we are all nosy people! Show as much of your personal life as you’re comfortable with!)

Approaching social media content as a photographer this way will do a couple things…

⚡️ It will reduce your mental load, which will allow you to pour better energy back into the creative parts of your business (and who wants to feel like crap about what to post all the time??)

⚡️ It will create hype around your business; people want to feel like they are a part of something. So create the foundation & structure and invite them in.

⚡️ It will allow your ideal client to have a clear idea of who you are & what the experience will be like when they hire you - this reduces a barrier to entry and makes it easier for them to quickly pay you.
